Solar tour kicks off in Colorado, headed to Arizona in October
The City Tour for Solar kicked off Aug. 1 at Colorado’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden and will hit Arizona in October as two biodiesel trucks featuring free public exhibits travel to 50 western cities over 100 days trying to bring solar energy into the mainstream.
Stops will include both the Denver Democratic National Convention in Denver and the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.
Solar energy services provider SunEdison is the tour’s lead sponsor along with Evergreen Solar Inc., a manufacturer of solar power panels; United Solar Ovonic LLC, a manufacturer of thin-film solar laminates; SMA America Inc., a manufacturer of solar inverters; and Xantrex Technology Inc., a manufacturer of advanced power electronic products.
“We are at an intersection of environmental concerns,” said Thomas Rainwater, CEO of SunEdison. “In the past, solar energy was considered an alternative energy, and it was relegated to a few rooftops or what we call “off-grid” applications. Today, there is an opportunity to make this a mainstream energy resource. This tour will help educate people in 50 cities on the ability we have right now, to generate power in their cities using solar energy.”
Arizona stops include:
• Sierra Vista, Oct. 17.
• Tucson, Oct. 20-23.
• East Valley, Oct. 27.
• Phoenix, Oct. 25-28.
• Flagstaff, Oct. 30
