Northeast Valley AZ Spas got the star treatment in the 2008 Mobil Travel Guide.
The publication chose five local spas for its Four Star awards, more than any other North American city.
That included the Alvadora Spa at Royal Palms, Centre for Well-Being at the Phoenician, Willow Stream Spa at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Spa at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale and Sanctuary Spa at Sanctuary on Camelback.
“We know that the Sonoran desert has healing properties about it and that makes us well positioned for the spa traveler,” said Laura McMurchie, Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau vice president of communications.
Hotels earning the Four Star awards included the Phoenician, Four Seasons, Boulders and Ritz-Carlton.
Mary Elaine’s at the Phoenician and Kai at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort were the two Valley restaurants that earned Mobil Four Star awards.
The 50th anniversary guide chose 149 restaurants, 125 hotels and 84 spas in North America for its Four Star awards.
The more exclusive Five Star awards went to 41 hotels, 17 restaurants and three spas, none in Arizona.
Tucson’s Ventana Room restaurant and the Spa at the Omni Tucson National Resort were the state’s other Four Star winners. Redevelopment work under way at P.V. Mall
Redevelopment around Paradise Valley Mall is moving forward about nine months after mall officials announced a multimillion-dollar renovation of the area.
Facade and landscaping improvements to part of the mall at Tatum Boulevard and Cactus Road and its surrounding six smaller shopping centers was dubbed “Come Back to Your Mall.”
Work is to begin in about two weeks on changes at Village Plaza, the center that houses a Sprouts Farmers Market and the Breadcrafters Bakery & Cafe. The center will have new landscaping, parking lot improvements, new stucco and new overhangs.
Westcor, which developed the mall in 1979, plans the first of three phases to change the look and feel of the mall and the smaller centers that surround it. The goal is to create more of a resort feel at the mall and its centers, said Amy Malloy, a development manager at Westcor’s Phoenix corporate office.
Landscape changes at the mall are expected to begin later this month. As part of the plan, some of the pine trees will be taken out and replaced with palm trees or other vegetation. Malloy said efforts with the city of Phoenix are being made to salvage any pines that could survive being transplanted.
