Desert Botanical Garden to display glass art

Glass is coming to the desert.

The Desert Botanical Garden announced today that in November it will be opening an installation of the glass art of Dale Chihuly.

Chihuly, whose Seattle studio is a factory of glass art, will bring five flatbed truckloads of glass to the garden to assemble along the outdoor paths of the garden.

“In the garden world, Chihuly is the hottest thing there is,” said Ken Schutz, executive director of the Desert Botanical Garden in Papago Park.

The exhibit opens Nov. 22 and continues through May 31, 2009.

Chihuly, among the most popular contemporary artists in any medium, appeals to both the connoisseur and the popular audience and is often credited with creating a resurgent market in art glass.

This will be Chihuly’s eighth show specifically designed for a public garden. Previous installations have appeared at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, and most recently at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh.

“He shows so well in gardens because much of his art is organically inspired in shape and color,” Schutz said.

Chihuly’s work has been a strong draw elsewhere, Schutz said, and Schutz hoped it would do the same in Phoenix.

“This is the biggest, most elaborate art show the garden has ever done,” he said.

In Missouri, a similar Chihuly show increased that garden’s visitorship and membership significantly, said Peggy Lents, vice president of communications there.

“And the buzz about us in the community grew,” she said. “It gave us an opportunity to bring a plethora of new people to the museum. It brought us people who wouldn’t have thought they would enjoy a garden visit and who said things like ‘I haven’t been to a garden since my third-grade field trip; I love it.’

Chihuly’s art is owned by more than 200 museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Smithsonian Institution.

In the Valley, his work is in the collections of the Phoenix Art Museum and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.

The most recent large exhibition of Chihuly’s work was at the Phoenix Art Museum in 2002.

Before that, a major exhibition of his work was held at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts in 1996.

This exhibition is different because it is outdoors.

“Gardens have a long tradition of art,” said Elaine McGinn, director of planning and exhibits for the Desert Botanical Garden, “but that is usually bronze or marble. What’s exciting for us is that this is a different kind of art to put into an outdoor space.”

Representatives of Chihuly’s studio have been to the garden twice, to make photographs of the spaces in order to plan the exhibit.

“Dale has had a love of gardens since he was young and loved his mother’s garden,” said Janet Makela, spokeswoman for the Chihuly Studio. “He has an affinity for gardens and has enjoyed pairing his work with gardens and in greenhouses and likes the symbiotic relationship between the botanicals and the art, paired together.”

The exhibit was arranged by Chihuly Studio and not curated by the Desert Botanical Garden staff; the garden declined to say how much it cost.

The admission for the garden will increase from $10 for adults to $15 during the run of the show, and tickets will be sold for specific entry times.

“The price of the show was a significant amount and increasing the admission price commensurately makes the exhibit possible,” Schutz said.

“We’ve done a lot of internal thinking about the garden and its role in the community.

“First and foremost, it’s a living museum of plants from around the world, but we also want to find new ways for old friends to engage with the garden and for new friends to come and engage with the plants and make a long-term connection with us.”

Westcor and several partners purchased the 112-acre Palisene site at auction today.

They paid $32 million for the land and committed to $67 million for roads, utilities and drainage improvements.

Westcor officials have said in the past that they want to build the Palisene shopping center and mixed-used project on the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Loop 101. They said Wednesday that those plans are being reconsidered because of the market.

The purchases from the Arizona State Land Department give Westcor a foothold on both sides of the Phoenix, Scottsdale border.

The company also has an agreement with DMB Partners on the One Scottsdale project, across Scottsdale Road from the Palisene site.

The auction has been delayed several times because another developer protested the details of the auction. A lawsuit on the matter was eventually decided in favor of the land department.

Art Coppola of the Macerich, parent company of Westcor, made the winning bid.

No other bidders took part.

Coppola said Wednesday morning that the project will be a market-driven long term effort.

Scott Nelson of Westcor said the company would begin working on infrastructure immediately.

Hot Summer Deals at Arizona Resorts

It’s a dry heat: Arizona in summer

Visiting Arizona in the off-season makes more sense than you might think — once you get past the 37 C t

Sure, it’s too hot to hike in the desert at noon. But it’s a good chance to take a spa or shopping vacation without the crowds, and stay in a luxury resort at dramatically reduced room rates.

When it’s hot, you can still go for spa treatments, try sunrise or sunset golfing, and make reservations for fine dining. You can take an air-conditioned rental car to an air-conditioned shopping area. You can take a Hummer tour of the desert at night — with night vision goggles. And of course, nightlife happens when the sun goes down.

If you stay in a resort like the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, you can spend the heat of the day poolside, enjoying Evian spritzes and chilled towels in the shade of a cabana.
“June is possibly the best month to visit,” says Kim Cole, director of public relations at the Four Seasons. “Rates drop so significantly.”

A luxury, one-bedroom casita with private plunge pool that rents for $1,800 a night in high season drops to $900 in the summer (June 1 to Sept. 6). If that’s a bit jaw-dropping, how about a standard casita, $595 in high season, dropping to $225 in summer.

Families on a tight budget might want to go a little more basic. The Comfort Inn Scottsdale, for example, offers a family fun package that starts at $79 per night and includes in-room pizza, complimentary breakfasts and shuttle service to nearby attractions such as theatres, shopping, bowling and the CrackerJax family fun park.

The all-pervasive air conditioning in Scottsdale means you can enjoy any indoor activity in comfort. Shopping centres, stores in shaded outdoor shopping areas, luxury spas, restaurants, the Su Vino Winery, museums (check out the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Phoenix Art Museum or the Pueblo Grande Museum & Archaeological Park) — just get to them in your air-conditioned car.

Take an early morning walk through the Desert Botanical Garden at night, when the Garden offers after-dark Flashlight Tours.

You can even rock climb — indoor, at AZ on the Rocks.
As for those daytime hikes? No reason you can’t still fit them in.
“You just have to be willing to get up at the crack of dawn,” says Laura McMurchie, vice-president of communications at the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau. “You can do jeep tours, (hot air) balloon tours, golfing, all of it. You just have to be willing to adjust your schedule a bit.”

Sedona Arizona - Red Rock Country - Spiritual reawakening

Adventure on the rocks

Step away from the tourist strip and drink up the scenery

Have Your Aura Photographed. Psychic Energy Readings Here. Vortex Information. Therapy on the Rocks.

These are just a few of the enthusiasm-dampening signs along the roadside driving into Sedona. This is “Red Rock Country,” after all, where the stunning terra cotta-coloured buttes tower into view as you approach the city popularized for not just its stunning copper scenery, but also its vortexes — the natural energy that is said to deeply affect people spiritually.

This phenomenon has been studied and written about by both scholars and enthusiasts for years. According to a recent Northern Arizona University study, 64 per cent of people who visited Sedona said they came for a spiritual reawakening.

After reading about Sedona for years as a New Age haven set against a backdrop of drop-dead beauty, one expects a moment of discovery like driving west on the Trans-Canada — where suddenly around the next bend, the Rockies appear. Sedona’s rocks have that kind of impact, too, except after a view of the first few gorgeous rock formations set against a brilliant blue sky, the windshield fills with signs, strip malls and a long line of traffic along its main street.

First Nations people — including the Hopi, Zuni, Navaho and Yavapai — have regarded this geographic enigma — eons of layer upon layer of sun-burnt sand and limestone formations sitting 1,300 metres above sea level — as far back as 4000 BC. So special was this place to them that it served as a venue for religious ceremonies. In the 1980s, stressed-out seekers from cities across North America came in search of refuge. New Age Sedona attracted massage therapists, psychics and healers, as well as artists and writers. But when word trickled out that this place held a special healing energy which enhanced spiritual and psychic experiences, the tourists came en masse.

In the spirit of the real Sedona, when you visit, escape the ice-cream eating and latte-drinking crowd. Magical places are not far from the ticky-tacky strip — with its crystal boutiques and cowboy trading posts –on some of the hundreds of trails and byways just a few minutes from the sprawling town. You may or may not have a spiritual experience, but you’ll be rewarded with silence, save for the crickets (and cicadas?) in the desert, and jaw-dropping views.

Save your souvenir shopping for the end of the day.

HIKE: Because you’re at a national site, (Coconino National Forest) you’ll have to buy a $5 daily Red Rock Park Pass (weekly pass is $15, annual $20) at any of the visitors centers along the way.

Maps are available, as are good suggestions from staff for a variety of hikes. There are hundreds of trails around the area, some well-marked, others not, and some trailheads that begin in residential areas.

We hiked Brin’s Mesa, a moderate climb on trails speckled with prickly pear cactus, yuccas and juniper trees. The vistas along the way are stunning and once on the mesa, you’ll see the valley for miles and be able to pinpoint the most well-known buttes in the area.

Other recommendations from local hikers:

n Wet Beaver Wilderness: Located about three kilometres east of the Sedona exit from I-17. Though challenging, this is purported to be a hidden gem of hiking trails that includes the opportunity to swim as you hike through some of the canyon pools along the 17.4-kilometre Bell Trail.

n A second hiking recommendation from a native Sedonan is the West Fork hiking trail, considered the premier and most scenic hiking trail in the area. It’s accessed from Oak Creek Scenic Road and part of the Secret Mountain Red Rock Wilderness. The wooded trail, which winds along terra-cotta canyon walls along Oak Creek, is about 16 kilometres, and the first four or five kilometres are easy enough for young families. The last portion would appeal to the seasoned hiker/backpacker.

DRIVE: Oak Creek Scenic Road (off Highway 89A) On the west side of Sedona’s main tourist area, take this winding, two-lane road that rises to an elevation of 2,000 metres.

Along the way, you’ll see people fishing and beautifully treed campgrounds.

But the main event is the vista from the top, which overlooks the lushly treed Oak Creek Canyon. There’s an interpretive trail and you’ll also find local Indians selling handicrafts and jewelry here, seven days a week.

Play: Bring your bathing suit and wade or better yet cruise down the natural water slide on your bottom at Slide Rock State Park, located about 10 kilometres up 89A, the Oak Creek Scenic Road. The fee is around $10 per car.

Chill: Back on the main street (North Highway 89A) line up at the Black Cow Cafe for homemade ice cream.

Four Seasons provides luxury in the desert

Arriving at the Four Seasons Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona., feels exactly the way it’s supposed to — like reaching an oasis in the desert.

We drive up to the giant lobby doors at dusk, and are treated to a view of the Sonoran desert at sunset past the lobby’s massive glass walls.

Entering this space, if you are a fan of beautiful design, is almost as breathtaking as viewing the incredible scenery outside its windows.

A $17-million renovation has transformed the resort into an oasis of “desert chic.” It’s rustic yet modern, very much in keeping with its natural desert setting. The buildings are arranged in one- and two-storey adobe-style casitas.

The lobby features massive wrought-iron chandeliers, log beams, stone floors and lounging couches of buttery leather piled high with bright, textured pillows. The accessories, from oversize, hand-carved and painted candlesticks to contemporary artwork, reflect the southwest.

Arriving after a harried flight, rental car experience and quick sightseeing tour, it feels like the vacation can finally begin as discreet staff whisk our bags away, hand us a glass of the hotel’s signature prickly pear lemonade and present a map of the resort’s endless amenities.

Here are the locations of the resort’s pools and restaurants. You may want to enjoy a nightcap on the deck of the new Onyx Bar & Lounge, right here. We see you have a reservation for Martinis and Manicures at the spa tomorrow . . . you’ll find it right here. Your private casita is here (don’t worry, we’ll drive you there in a golf cart in just a moment). The guided stargazing tour begins at 8 p.m. on this patio. Let us know if we can do anything else for you.

Ah, five-diamond resorts. It all bodes well for a relaxing weekend.

When we follow the porter into our suite, the real level of luxury becomes clear. As with all of the resort’s 210 guestrooms and 22 suites, this one has been given a complete makeover.

The color palette, like that of the lobby, reflects a desert in full bloom — bright, yet earthy tones like poppy, tan, rust and sunflower. It’s all very tactile; custom hand-hewn furnishings, yarn art from the Huichol Indians in Mexico. The suite has dark hardwood flooring; hand-painted sinks from Mexico in the bathrooms, and floor-to-ceiling sliding patio doors that open to a private, walled terrace.

That terrace turns out to be the place we spend most of our time; it features terrycloth covered chaise lounges, a clay kiva fireplace and its own plunge pool.

It takes us a day to realize the suite also features an outdoor “garden shower.” Just off the main ensuite is a small door that opens to an open-air enclosure. Hidden from view, yet open to the light breezes and sunshine, it is a glorious place to rinse off the dust and sweat of a morning hike.

The Four Seasons backs onto a popular hiking area called Pinnacle Peak Park, meaning guests need only take a short stroll to the trailhead. The hike is moderate or strenuous, depending on how long you choose to continue, and the views are spectacular. We climbed at our own pace, stopping frequently to take many photos of the rocks and cactus against the improbably blue sky.

The resort, in co-ordination with the park, offers a range of nature-themed outings and spa treatments. Try the guided Desert Preservation Hike up Pinnacle Peak, followed by the 80-minute Healing Hiker Therapeutic Massage.

This is not a place to stay if you’re looking for wild nightlife. This is a place to stay if you want to be close to the rugged beauty of the desert but also be in the lap of luxury. You can venture into the desert, or view the beauty from poolside.

Or from the golf course. The Four Seasons is adjacent to the renowned Weiskopf and Morrish-designed courses of Troon North, and golf packages are one of its biggest draws.

There is also a 12,000-square-foot spa and fitness centre with 14 treatment rooms. The spa, like many in Arizona, features indigenous ingredients such as Sedona Red Clay.

We choose what seems like the perfect spa treatment for our girls’ weekend — martinis and manicures (or pedicures, as the preference may be).

Afterward, the ever-gracious staff at Talavera, the hotel’s signature restaurant, took our wet toenails and flip-flops in stride, and still gave us a good table. (There appear to be no bad tables at Talavera; it’s either a view of the floor-to ceiling windows and fireplace from inside, or outside on the deck with a view of the sunset over the desert.) The fresh menu reflects the southwest fusion style that is the hallmark of the modern Scottsdale culinary scene. We feasted on free-range chicken and Nebraska corn-fed beef, with creative sides like charred corn, potato mousseline and savory pumpkin soufflé, enjoying the presentation and service as much as the flavors.

The resort has a staff ratio of two staff per guest room, and the service — from the serving of poolside fruit kabobs to the golf bag storage and retrieval, to the twice-daily housekeeping service — reflects it. Not surprisingly, the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale has been rated among the Top 50 Resorts in the U.S. and No. 1 Resort in Arizona by the 2007 Zagat Survey.

If you have time to explore, the Four Seasons is a perfect home base for outings to the Grand Canyon, the red rocks of Sedona or Lake Powell.

But once you’ve checked in, you may not want to tear yourself away.

If you go

Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North

- Rooms start at $565 during peak season, dropping to as low as $205 in the summer months. The resort has 22 private casitas suites, most featuring a patio with plunge pool. A one-bedroom suite starts at $950 in peak season, drops to $500 per night after June 1.

The Four Seasons offer vacation packages ranging from Golf Getaways to Summer Spa to Desert Romance.
